AUTOMOBILES

Ferrari
Ferrari

The most beautiful cars ever built. To me, it is not even a car, it is an object of art. Curiously enough, while Ferrari cars are celebrated universally, most car enthusiasts consider Ferrari not as revolutionary cars, but more as exceptionally well crafted machines using traditional techniques. But who cares! They are beautiful.

From my youth, one model particularly attracted me. It was not one of those things one can drive on the road, but I found it magnificent.

Its name: the D50 Ferrari-Lancia Formula 1. Built in 1955, it raced in late 1955 and during most of 1956 Formula 1 season driven by the greatest racing pilots of the time: Juan Manuel Fangio, Eugenio Castellotti, Peter Collins and Mike Hawthorn.

I do not know of any young French boy who did not dream of racing one of these.

CHOCOLATES

Cote d'Or ok, there is chocolate and there is Chocolate. To me, the absolute best Chocolate is this one, the Cote d'Or, made in Belgium.

If you wish to have a taste of it and can't find any at your local supermarket, you can always buy some from:

DOGS

Afghan Hound
The French moto of afgan hounds is "Homme ne puis, chien ne veux."

It means "man can't be, dog wont be."

I owned 3 afghan hounds in my life, adored all 3 of them, and I must admit that their attitude is totally in accordance with the moto. These dogs are really..... snob!

The one pictured on the right really is of that bluish color. Afghans of this color are very difficult to find and very expensive to buy since the color is actually an abnormality. I was never fortunate enough to find one like that, to my great regret.

FOOD FOR THOUGHTS
Do it anyway!

The following, so I'm told, was written by Kent M. Keith

People are unreasonable, illogical and self-centered.
Love them anyway!
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.
Do good anyway!
If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway!
The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow.
Do good anyway!
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable.
Be honest and frank anyway!
The biggest (people) with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the
smallest (people) with the smallest minds.
Think big anyway!
People favor underdogs but follow only top dogs.
Fight for some underdog anyway!
What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight.
Build anyway!
People really need help but may attack you if you help them.
Help people anyway!
Give the world the best you have, and you'll get kicked in the teeth.
Give the world the best you've got anyway!

MOVIES

Singin' in the Rain
As most musicals of the 50s era of cinematography, this 1952 musical production was released in France, in English with French subtitles during the summer season along with another movie called "La Bergere et le Ramoneur".
50 years later, I still remember that evening as one of the most marvelous moments I ever had. On top of it, my parents took us, my brother and I, out at night... and that was a real treat in itself.
Who does not have a video copy of the film?.... I do...

RESTAURANTS
Lulu's Cafe

I have discovered, right here in Laguna Hills, CA, a small French restaurant. The owners are French and the chef used to be the chef at the Mission Viejo Country Club. I have eaten good food all over the world, but I must admit that "LULU's Cafe" is one of the very top ones in quality. The type of menu is typically French. I have not tasted everything yet, but I understand that the bouillabaise is outstanding. I tried the steak au poivre, the chateaubriant bearnaise and other main courses and was very impressed. Deserts are also marvelous.

If you are in the area and you like good food, certainly the place to go.

SONGS

Over The Rainbow

Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Way Up High
There's a Land That I Heard of
Once In a Lullabye
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Skies Are Blue
And the Dreams That You Dare to Dream
Really Do Come True
Someday I'll Wish Upon A Star
And Wake Up Where the Clouds Are Far Behind Me
Where Troubles Melt Like Lemon Drops
Away Above the Chimney Tops
That's Where You'll Find Me
Somewhere Over the Rainbow
Bluebirds Fly
Birds Fly Over the Rainbow
Why, Then, Oh Why Can't I?
If Happy Little Bluebirds Fly
Beyond the Rainbow
Why, Oh, Why, Can't I?
